Sanctuary Chiquito is a nature reserve in the neighboring mountain of the Laguna Verde. It is located in the km 28 on the road connecting Zipaquira with San Cayetano (68 km from Bogotá). The reserve reaches the altitudes from 3,500 to 3750 meters and is in an excellent view point over the Magdalena Valley and the region of Pacho (Cundinamarca).
On clear days from the summits of the mountains it is possible to see the glaciers of the Los Nevados national park in the central mountain range of Andes. In the western side of the reserve there are important areas of cloud forest which supply water to the town of Pacho. The highlights of the reserve are the rock formations and the the broad valleys full of “frailejones”.
Formation of the reserve is a private initiative with an objective to raise an awareness of the importance of the “páramo” in the region currently being threatened by mining, agriculture and communications infrastructure. The route is mostly rolling terrain and the trail is around 6 km long which are completed on average in 4 hours.
The cost of the hike includes transportation and guidance. Each person must bring lunch and beverages. Always be prepared for rain, cold or heat. We recommend to bring some clothe to change after the hike.
