Utica is located west of Bogota towards the town of Villeta about 119 kilometers from the capital with the altitudes between 500 and 1,600 meters above the sea level. The main economic activities of the region are growing sugar cane (for the production of “panela”) and livestock. During the period of conquest the Panches tribes settled down in the region. The town was founded in 1863.

This hike takes us along the Black River following an old railway in the Gualiva. The trail can be characterized as quite flat and it runs through the river canyon of tropical vegetation surrounded by steep mountains. We go through a couple of ancient tunnels which were built in the early 20th century as a train passage. We end the walk in the town of Tobia which belongs to the municipality of Nimaima.

The cost of the hike includes transportation and guidance. Each person must bring lunch. The average temperature of the region is about 25 C and there is a necessity of constant hydration.
