North of Nemocón municipality there is the valley of Checua River. The southern part of the valley is the Tatacoita Desert. This is a region affected by erosion process due to natural causes which during hundreds of years have formed a large canyon where the sand and rocks have carved out impressive mazes and gullies. The colors of the sand and the soil seem like a mosaic.

In the area fossils and numerous archaeological remains have been found. Tatacoita offers a contrasting landscape and beauty of the arid highlands of Cundinamarca and Boyacá departments. The desert is an excellent example of the desolate landscape.

Hiking distance: 5 to 8 km, hiking time: 4 to 5 hours. Dominant ecosystem: mountain forest with exotic plantations.

The cost of the hike includes transportation and guides. Each person must bring lunch and hydration. Always be prepared for rain, cold or heat. It is important to bring extra cloth and the usage of sunscreen is recommended.
